Castle of the Lubomirski Family

At the turn of the 15th and 16th century Mikołaj S. Ligęza started to build a fortified residence. The next owners, Lubomirski family, reconstructed the castle a few times; the fortifications were expanded, the castle was moated, there was a drawbridge installed (the present appearance of the castle corresponds to the one from the 19th and 20th century), in the vicinity of the castle, in the gardens, a summer residence was erected at the turn of the 17th and 18th century. The late baroque castle of the Lubomirski family has been preserved without any changes till now.

3 Maja Street

The main road of this part of city centre starts from Fara 3 Maja Street (previously called Pańska Street, and known as "Paniaga"). It has been treated as the main broadwalk in Rzeszów and business centre of this part of the city. While public buildings are very representative, the residential buildings here are usually small and not complicated in structure. Between 1950s and 60s the majority of tenements was thoroughly renovated, their architectural structure was simplified. The house on the corner from Farny Square with Dom Książki bookshop was built in about 1840 by Franciszek Skielski, who organized there the first printing house in Rzeszów. The 18th and 19th century period houses are adjacent to the printing house.

Farny Church

Parochial church dedicated to St. Stanisław and St. Wojciech. As per the old notes, the parochial church has been there since 1363. Presumably, the first church was destroyed during the great fire (around 1427); and the existing building may be traced back to the beginning of the 15th. Most probably, the oldest part of the church, i.e. the gothic chancel, dates back to 1434. At the beginning of the 16th century, the church was fortified - it was encircled by the earth rampart. However, later it was destroyed by fire in 1621 and reconstructed in 1623 due to the efforts of Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza. In 1754 the main nave was rebuilt, the lateral naves were added and the church was given a baroque interior design. The last renovation work was conducted in: 1962-65, 1971-72 and1976. At present, the church is a monumental, three nave building in the baroque style.

Old Town Square in Rzeszów

The oldest part of the city - the Town Square with the town hall, historic well and the adjacent streets - was created at the beginning. It was a market place and also a social and business centre. Around the square and the town hall, from the 14th till 19th/20th century houses, inns, shops were built. The houses were equipped with cellars and vaults which were used for business and defense purposes. In 2001, 213-meter-long Underground Tourist Route with 34 cellars situated on different levels (the lowest at a depth of 9.58m) was open for the public. After a thorough renovation of the Square panel in 2006-2007, the 369-meter route and 40 chambers can be visited.

Vaults

The town established in the 15th century was granted numerous privileges, among other things the right to store different goods. The goods exchange was simplified by the location of the city on the trade routes. When town defensive walls had been erected, the limited space to store goods was the reason for building the underground storehouses. Deep, up to 10 m under the ground, the cellars create an irregular system of corridors and varied vaults (up to now, only the ones built of stone and bricks survived). Now, there is "Underground Tourist Route" which is looked after by District Museum in Rzeszów .The vaults and the underground route are now being reconstructed.

Bernardine Monastery

The church and monastery are believed to have been built in 1624-1629 by the masons from Leipzig. According to the existing documents the founder handed over the building to the Bernardine order 25th March 1629. Between 1898-1906 the church was thoroughly redecorated under the supervision of Zbigniew Hendel, and renovated during the period of 1978-79. The contemporary founder of the monastery was the owner of Rzeszów - Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza. As per his will, the church was to constitute a mausoleum of the noble Ligęza family. The buildings of the monastery were situated on a small hill, surrounded by the swamps and marshes of the little Mikośka river. They were of military significance in the town fortified system created by Ligęza. The evidence of this are the firing openings used by the defenders that have been preserved for all these years.

Wanda Siemaszkowa Theatre

The first professional drama theatre was established in Rzeszów in 1944 as National Theatre. In the building of the theatre there used to be "Sokół" Physical Exercise Society. The building was erected between 1890-1900. Kazimierz Dejmek, Adam Hanuszkiewicz, Ignacy Machowski made their debut as actors in this theater under the supervision of an eminent actress and director - Wanda Siemiaszkowa. The building of the theater is also famous for one historic event: in 1895, the first Polish peasant party - Stronnictwo Ludowe - was formed.
